The natural beauty and unparalleled serenity of Pacifica has beckoned travelers to this coastal gem for more than 100 years. Located just 15 minutes south of San Francisco, Pacifica is easily accessible from Highway 1. It was from this place that Captain Gaspar de Portola first spied the San Francisco Bay in late autumn 1769. After making camp in Pedro Valley(now in the city of Pacifica), he climbed Sweeney Ridge and became the first European Explorer to see the Bay. A trail leads to the top of Sweeney Ridge where a commemorative plaque recounts history – the site offers tremendous views into the Bay as well as the Pacific Ocean behind you.
